Geeking out has value!

Wow, what a redeeming thing to read. Geeking out is actually a good thing! Geeks around the world will love to know that modern scientific research has proven that they need to be spending more time hanging out, messing around, and geeking out.

I like the reminder from the contructivism article that the half life of knowledge is diminishing. Also again it is fascinating that we are blogging, which according to the article on the new Bloom’s taxonomy is at the lowest level. That is why I tried to be creative in my post this week 😉

There was another thought voiced by a student that being creative in school “does not count” since you are doing it for a grade. That is an interesting phenomenon I have witnessed myself. I think that is part of why the outside trips (WOW and mini-courses) are so life changing for students. They help a student get out of the “grade” circle and just “perform” at life!

What are your hopes and expectations for the course with at least one reflection from the assigned readings from class.

My hope for this course is that I can begin being a thought leader in this field. I am ready to stop following and start leading more.

I am not a big fan of the Christiansen article. I have read most of his book and honestly he just keeps on pointing to “computer based education” as the golden solution. Yes, it is very promising and will certainly play an increasing role in the future of education, but the world is bigger thank just getting a computer in front of every student.

I related best to the Richardson article. Perhaps it is the most modern of the four articles, but for some reason it just struck home. One thing they almost all had In common was the call for teachers to “wake up”. Honestly I am tired of this call to wake up. I am awake ad ready to roll. I want to hear more from those who are living it and less from those who are calling on teachers to to take action.

Other very random thoughts:

Quote:
“For educators and the schools in which they teach, the challenges of this moment are significant. Our ability to learn whatever we want, whenever we want, from whomever we want is rendering the linear, age-grouped, teacher-guided curriculum less and less relevant.”
Then why the heck are we all taking this masters class?

Random thought after reading about all this anytime, anywhere learning:

Sense making is mentioned and I love emphasizing the need for this skill.

Last article. We have moved on from this 10 year old idea of building robots. Now we think of cool things for the robot to do. Just my $.02.

Where is your comfort level when it comes to educational technology and information literacy?

I have a high level of comfort with educational technology. It is loads of fun for me and very professionally satisfying to work with people around educational technology. As the Director of Technology for the American Embassy School, my world is somewhat divided between the technical and the instructional. I like the challenge that provides!

The “save” icon

When are we going to quit using a picture of the diskette as a “save” icon? Diskettes are long gone. Does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement? Will it just be an icon from here on and we will continue to use it even though the upcoming generation does not know what a diskette is?

Notion Ink Adam and Motorola Atrix

Okay I love technology but I don’t buy every new gadget that comes out. I am too thrifty for that. But this is a device I am really interested in. There were lots of tablets that came out during the CES in Las Vegas last week but this one is pretty cool. I have been following the Notion Ink blog for a year now, ever since they went public. A friend of mine, Jon Stocksdale, told me about the Adam back in the beginning and I have been hooked ever since. Check out the Notion Ink Adam here: http://www.notionink.com . One of my other favorites from CES this year was the Motorola Atrix. I have never been a Motorola fan, but this new Android smartphone looks awesome. A smartphone that “converts” into a laptop (okay so it is basically just a web browser) is something I really need to see in person.

Camping in the yard

I had a blast the other night sleeping out in the yard with the kids. We did a fire and smores (thank babe for getting the supplies) and then the kids and I slept in the old Eureka Alpine Meadows. Man that tent smells “tenty”. I plan to do a few more fires this winter as the kids loved it and I did too!

U2 interpretive dance

I was outside the other day with the kids sweeping the bricks off that are our yard. I went inside to grab the iPod so I could make the sweeping a little more fun. Well as it turns out the kids liked the U2 I was playing! I think Bono would be proud. Have a look:
